Welcome, AI enthusiasts
Crime lab DNA files have been open to editing for thirty years, and no lab was ever required to prove one came out of the machine untouched. Three researchers used an ordinary AI tool to write the code and changed what a DNA test said without going near the sample. The edited file opened in the lab's own software and a normal review picked up nothing. A DNA match is often the one piece of evidence that decides a verdict, and nothing exists to confirm the file behind it. Let's dive in!

AI SECURITY FLAW
⚖️ AI Can Now Plant Your DNA at a Crime Scene
Evolving AI: AI-written code can rewrite the crime lab file a jury sees as a DNA match.
Key Points:
Code written with AI can move the genetic markers a crime lab machine records, and the edited file still opens normally.
The change happens inside the digital file while the physical sample stays untouched, and no case is known to have been tampered with.
Thermo Fisher rated the flaw at the second-highest severity level and shipped fixes for the affected machines on July 31.
Details:
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency coordinated the disclosure after Nathan Adams, Kevin Dyer and Laura Gaydosh Combs reported the weakness in May. The three wrote their editing code with widely available AI software, and the fix adds a signature inside GeneMapper ID-X and four other programs. Files written since roughly 1995 have no signature, and no lab was ever required to record what one looked like at the start..
Why It Matters:
The FBI runs the national DNA database these profiles feed into, and most people assume a lab result about them is simply correct. That trust rested on how hard the files were to edit, and AI has taken the difficulty away. Anyone who ever needs a lab to vouch for them, in a criminal case or a custody fight, is relying on a check nobody performs.
The best prompt engineers aren't typing. They're talking.
Power users figured this out early: speaking a prompt gives you 10x more context in half the time. You include the edge cases, the examples, the tone you want — because talking is fast enough that you don't skip them.
Wispr Flow captures everything you say and turns it into clean, structured text for any AI tool. Speak messy. Get polished input. Paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or wherever you work.
89% of messages sent with zero edits. 4x faster than typing. Works system-wide on Mac, Windows, and iPhone.

🍎 Apple Wants OpenAI's Hardware Frozen
Evolving AI: Apple wants an interim order barring OpenAI from touching its secrets long before any trial.
Key Points:
Apple asked a federal judge to bar OpenAI and two former employees from using anything it calls confidential.
It wants four people questioned under oath within weeks, far ahead of the schedule a case like this normally runs.
OpenAI called the request baseless and published the private emails and messages behind Apple's claims.
Details:
Apple explained the court in Northern California that no payout later could undo the damage, and it wants OpenAI hardware chief Tang Yew Tan, former engineer Chang Liu and current employee Yu-Ting Peng questioned under oath. OpenAI answered that night in a post titled Apple is getting this wrong, showing Apple staff asking Liu to airdrop his old iCloud folder weeks after he had left. The fight is really about a device OpenAI is building to answer without apps or an operating system, and Apple makes the phone it would replace. Tan gave Apple 24 years of his working life before he walked, and Apple wants him first in the deposition queue..
Why It Matters:
OpenAI says access Apple failed to close cannot count as theft, and a judge will now settle that for everyone moving between AI companies. The same ruling shapes how fast a rival to the phone gets built, and whether the AI most people reach for stays inside hardware Apple designs. Anyone who has ever left a job with an account still live has more riding on this case than they realise.
Stop Paying for 6 Tools. One AI Does It All.

🚫 Europe's 38-Person Watchdog Can Ban AI in 27 Countries
Evolving AI: The EU AI Act became enforceable on Sunday, two years after it entered into force.
Key Points:
The AI Office can demand technical documents and run its own evaluations of any model sold in the EU.
The rules reach everyone from startups to OpenAI and DeepSeek, whatever country the company is based in.
Chatbots must tell people they are AI, and AI-generated images and video have to carry labels.
Details:
OpenAI and Anthropic are already in contact with the AI Office over cyberattacks carried out by their models. The Commission added 38 people to that office and can question company staff during an investigation. It can fine a provider up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide turnover, and it has opened a confidential reporting line for the public plus a whistleblower platform for people who work at the labs.
Why It Matters:
ChatGPT and Gemini answer questions for millions of Europeans who cannot judge for themselves whether either model was tested properly. Someone with the power to look inside these systems is now doing that work on their behalf. Nobody using the same models in the US or the UK has a regulator who can act on what it finds.
