Welcome, AI enthusiasts
South Korea halted trading on its stock market twice in 48 hours this week, and the company that set it off had just posted the best numbers of its life. SK Hynix earned 557% more than it did a year ago on AI memory and came in about $2.4 billion under forecasts, and that shortfall took roughly $590 billion off Korean shares. Somewhere in that arithmetic sits the question every AI builder is circling. Let's dive in!

AI CHIP ROUT
💥 AI Chips Cost South Korea $590B in 2 Days
Evolving AI: South Korea's index leans on two AI chipmakers, and SK Hynix's record quarter still fell short.
Key Points:
Two days of selling erased roughly $590 billion from South Korean shares.
SK Hynix lifted profit 557% to $41 billion, short of the $44 billion analysts wanted, and the stock fell 9.61%.
China's CXMT debuted 466% higher days earlier, as reports put Nvidia in talks to backstop about $250 billion for an OpenAI data centre.
Details:
South Korea halted trading twice inside 48 hours, a first in its history, after the KOSPI sank as much as 12.63% and Samsung shed 13.4% in one session. Retail products built on borrowed money and launched in May deepened the slide, with one tracking SK Hynix falling more than 32% in a day, and Finance Minister Koo Yun Cheol apologised in parliament over their approval. In New York, Micron fell 8.85% inside a chip selloff that has now wiped more than $1 trillion off global market value.
Why It Matters:
Nvidia's AI accelerators are what South Korea's memory exists to feed, and the companies buying them are still deciding how far to build. Every AI service you touch runs on that hardware, which means the question investors asked this week about how much AI spending is real also sets what your tools and your next phone cost, and South Korea was the most exposed place for that question to land.

AI FOR SCIENCE
🔬 OpenAI Gives 100,000 Scientists Its Top Model for Free
Evolving AI: ChatGPT for Academic Researchers gives credentialed researchers models no grant would cover.
Key Points:
Access is live at the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure, with 10,000 researchers cleared this summer.
OpenAI plans to widen the program to 100,000 researchers through 2027, ten times the launch group.
Every approval carries four collaborator invites, and researcher data stays out of model training by default.
Details:
OpenAI's GPT‑5.6 Sol scores 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4, the benchmark built for research-level maths, against 72.5% for GPT‑5.5, and the program sits inside a commitment of more than $250 million to outside research through 2027. Accepted researchers get more than 75 life science skills covering genomics, sequencing and protein modelling, while physicist Rogerio Jorge is already applying AI to open-source fusion software that national laboratories use.
Why It Matters:
Rogerio Jorge's fusion software and the genomics labs now getting the same access work on problems that reach ordinary lives through energy bills and treatment options. A scientist with no industry compute can test in an afternoon what once waited on a grant cycle, which widens who gets to try the ideas that eventually land in a clinic or on a grid.

VOICE AGENTS
⚡ Grok's New Voice Model Outruns OpenAI's Flagship
Evolving AI: SpaceXAI's Grok Voice Think Fast 2.0 starts talking in under a second on live phone calls.
Key Points:
Grok Voice Think Fast 2.0 starts speaking 0.70 seconds into a call, against 1.21 seconds for OpenAI's GPT-Realtime-2.1.
The model resolved 56.5% of test support calls where OpenAI's flagship managed 45.7%, though OpenAI leads narrowly on conversational flow.
The grok-voice-latest tag switches over automatically on August 5, priced at $0.08 per minute of audio.
Details:
Artificial Analysis scores the model at 82.9% on its speech-to-speech index against 79.1% for OpenAI's flagship. Transcription accuracy improved 1.4 times across 24 languages, and SpaceXAI puts its lead over purpose-built speech-to-text engines near ten times once background noise and phone-line compression enter the call. Reasoning token use fell to 0.4 times, letting tool calls resolve before the agent finishes its opening sentence.
Why It Matters:
Starlink ran the model through live support calls before this announcement, and SpaceXAI reported stronger sales conversion alongside fewer escalations to human staff. Any business paying someone to answer a phone now has a cheaper option, and the caller will never be told which one picked up.
👀 Our tip
Most people try to learn AI by jumping between random YouTube videos and tutorials. Microsoft released a complete free AI curriculum on GitHub that takes you from the fundamentals all the way to neural networks and modern LLMs, with hands-on labs, quizzes, and real projects. If you've been looking for a structured way to actually understand AI, this is one of the best places to start.
