🚨 Australia Becomes the First Country to Ban AI Music

A Queensland DJ put a cover of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" on Spotify, and for 16 weeks it charted like anything else in the Australian Top 20. It topped radio airplay in July while other producers argued in public about how he made it. He later updated the credits to say the vocals and the drums came from AI. Australia's recording industry body rewrote its chart rules on 25 August, and the chart published last Friday is the first one they govern. A recording qualifies only when human creative input is the primary driver of the work and the AI services behind it were licensed and lawful. A recording fails when generative AI produced the lead vocal or a key instrumental performance, and backing vocals or production work do not count against it. Nobody runs a detector over the charts, so the body works from what rights holders declare, and it ruled the Fawaz cover ineligible on information the artist supplied himself.

Warner Music has settled with Suno and licensed AI models ship this year, so more machine-made music is heading for streaming platforms every month. Subscribers get no signal on a playlist about which tracks came from a person, and the only check happens at upload and rests on whoever filled in the form. The chart body has asked radio stations across Australia to apply the same standard, and its own weekly chart is where the rule gets tested first.

Evolving AI: SpaceX bought Cursor in August, and OpenAI is walking away because of it.

OpenAI wrote that it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology within the terms of service, and pointed to Musk's companies breaking contracts before, including his sworn admission this year that xAI violated the same terms. The agreement with Cursor had a cancellation window that opened after a change of control, so OpenAI gave the maximum notice allowed, proposed November 12 and ruled out future models including Astra. Michael Truell put OpenAI's share of Cursor traffic at roughly 5% and said the two sides are still in talks. Cursor also runs its own models alongside Anthropic, Google and xAI, so most work there never touched OpenAI.

Why It Matters:

Cursor users inside that 5% can still reach GPT with a personal API key or the Codex extension, though neither route works with Tab, Auto routing, or the agents Cursor runs in the cloud. Every model in Cursor comes from a company that can stop supplying it, and OpenAI gave 76 days of warning. Developers who chose Cursor because it offered every major model will have one fewer built into the editor.
