Evolving AI: Fable 5, Anthropic's new top model, is free in paid plans until June 22.

Anthropic just released its first Mythos-class model called Claude Fable 5, the one they kept locked away since April because it proved alarmingly good at cracking open nearly every major operating system and browser. The public version adds a safety wall, so risky cybersecurity or biology questions get answered by the older Opus 4.8 instead, which happens on average in fewer than 5% of sessions. The same skill that worried them is what makes it powerful at ordinary work. By Anthropic's testing, Fable 5 solves over a third more problems than OpenAI's GPT-5.5 on the toughest test of real-world software engineering and nearly half again as many as Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro. No public model had ever cleared 80% on that test before. On the very hardest coding problems it scores five times higher than GPT-5.5, and even Opus 4.8, Anthropic's best until yesterday, trails it by around 16%. Anthropic says the model tests its own output and refines it before answering, the kind of behavior that matters most on the projects teams spend weeks on.

Evolving AI: Hollywood's art directors say Scorsese sold them out for an AI tool.

Martin Scorsese took an advisor role at Black Forest Labs and fronted an ad for its FLUX model. In it he storyboards a medieval scene and praises the tool's cinematic intelligence. The Art Directors Guild answered Tuesday with a statement opening "Mr. Scorsese, the business is not in flux." The union covers the storyboard artists, set designers and illustrators it says the tool replaces and accuses FLUX of training on their work without consent or pay.

A 2024 study found 204,000 US entertainment jobs facing disruption within three years and design roles sat near the top of that list. Those are the people in this dispute. An endorsement like Scorsese's makes it easier for studios to trim those desks and the entry roles where young artists start tend to go first.

Evolving AI: The Pentagon adds Alibaba Baidu and BYD to its military blacklist.

Alibaba leads the new names on the Pentagon's military companies list published Monday. Baidu BYD robot maker Unitree and biotech firm WuXi AppTec join a roster that now counts 188 firms with US defense contracts closing off this month. Some of these additions sit surprisingly close to daily life. Unitree built the dancing robots seen on America's Got Talent and WuXi makes the key ingredient in Zepbound.

The real effect lands on price tags and shipping delays. Export controls usually follow this list so robots EVs and even weight loss drugs built on these supply chains could get pricier or harder to find. Most of that pressure builds quietly before any ban arrives.
