Researchers say the tool checked timezones and proxy data against a hidden list of Chinese labs.
Anthropic says the feature was a March experiment to stop account abuse, not surveillance.

Alibaba added Claude Code to its high-risk software list on July 3, and moved staff to its own tool Qoder. The order follows a June 30 Reddit teardown claiming the assistant checked timezones and proxy data against a hidden list of Chinese firms, then reported back to Anthropic. It lands weeks after Anthropic accused Alibaba-linked accounts of running millions of queries to copy its models.
Why It Matters:
Anthropic says the flagged code was an anti-abuse experiment that no outside firm has verified. For developers the shift is about trust. A coding agent runs with deep access to a machine and its network, and the reporting it does upstream stays hard to see. Enterprises now treat that access as a compliance question.
