Google's Gemini sized the food and water, and the men used YouTube and AllTrails but never opened the ranger website, which contained official information about the hiking location. They reached the top at seven in the evening, seven hours after rangers ask climbers to turn back. In the dark they lost the route and dropped into Mud Creek Canyon, and one man hurt his knee in a fall. Rangers reached the group the next morning and found them hungry and thirsty after a night in the open.
Why It Matters:
Chatbots now handle errands people used to think through themselves, and they never sound unsure. People ask them about money and medicine every day, and plenty act on the reply without checking it. Gemini got this one wrong, and nobody in the group thought to check the answer against anything else. The three men told rangers afterwards that they had leaned on Gemini instead of their own thinking.

Evolving AI: ChatGPT Work can now copy how you write by reading the apps you connect to it.
Key Points:
ChatGPT reads Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint once those accounts are connected, then carries the patterns it finds into new drafts.
OpenAI has kept the feature to drafting, so nothing leaves an inbox until a person approves it.
Switching it on gives the model the contents of those accounts, and administrator settings limit how far it reaches.

OpenAI released the Writing style setting yesterday, and it changes the tone instruction. Until now a person had to spell out what they wanted and type something like make this sound casual into a box. The model reads old messages instead and picks up recurring phrases, sign-offs and capitalisation habits. Nothing needs training up, and the drafts start matching from the first request.

Why It Matters:
Slack and Gmail hold years of your writing, and connecting them hands ChatGPT a model of how you sound. AI gets more personal with each update, and it gets harder to say who actually wrote a given thing. Photographs went first and video followed, back when the catch was a sixth finger or a shadow falling the wrong way. People could still catch machine writing by its tone, and that check stops working once drafts carry your sign-off.

Evolving AI: Australian PM Anthony Albanese wants platforms to ask before an algorithm sorts a feed.
Key Points:
Australia's proposed duty of care would cover AI chatbots and search engines as well as social feeds.
Platforms would have to notify every new and existing user and let them pick their own default feed.
Anyone who opts out would see only the friends and creators they already follow.
Details:
Australia released the exposure draft on Tuesday, proposing fines of up to A$109.2 million for platforms that breach the new duty of care. No other government has asked platforms to put that choice to every adult, and the rules would cover Australians over 16 as younger users lost access in December. The eSafety regulator would enforce the law, and the government plans to send the legislation to Parliament this year.
Why It Matters:
Britain and Denmark brought in their own age limits within a year of Australia's ban, and other governments may copy the algorithm switch next. The law reaches ranking itself, so a chatbot that personalises answers falls under the same duty as Meta and TikTok, which would have to ask people first. Whether a pop-up changes what anyone sees each day is a question no country has yet answered in practice.
