THE DAILY BRIEFING   /   4 MIN READ

Welcome back, AI enthusiasts.

Google is back at the top of the AI race, and its latest breakthrough could have consequences far beyond chatbots. Just 15 days after its previous release, Google unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, overtaking leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic while showing remarkable cybersecurity capabilities. Let’s Dive In!

Evolving AI: Google has taken the #1 spot in AI intelligence rankings with Gemini 4 Carbon, ahead of leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

KEY POINTS

  • Google introduced Carbon just 15 days after Gemini 4 Argon became widely available, with improvements in coding and complex, long-running tasks.

  • Carbon scored 88.2% for finding security vulnerabilities, 54.8% for exploiting them, and 71.0% for fixing them in cybersecurity tests.

  • Google is initially restricting Carbon to selected cybersecurity defenders, with a wider release planned but no confirmed date.

DETAILS

Google's Gemini 4 Carbon can investigate bugs across large software projects and develop fixes over tasks lasting several days. In internal tests, it more than doubled Argon's success rate at writing secure code, while Artificial Analysis ranked it second for autonomous coding tasks behind Claude Opus 5.5. Because these capabilities could also help attackers, Google is testing stronger safeguards before expanding access. Introductory API pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

Google's return to the top of AI rankings with Gemini 4 Carbon puts it ahead of OpenAI and Anthropic on a major benchmark, while its cybersecurity capabilities could have even bigger consequences for everyday internet users. The recent critical PHP vulnerabilities, which Google's earlier Gemini 4 Argon helped researchers uncover, showed how dangerous flaws can exist in software powering millions of websites. Such weaknesses can put people's personal data, online accounts, payments, and essential services at risk. If Carbon can reliably discover and help fix similar vulnerabilities faster, security teams could close these gaps before attackers exploit them, potentially preventing widespread data breaches, financial losses, and disruptions to services people depend on.

9 Plays e-Commerce Leaders Are Running to Protect Margin

On the surface, selling out sounds like a pretty good holiday problem to have. That’s the case until the costs add up.

CommerceIQ discovered that stockouts cost brands 140% more than baseline on Black Friday and 248% more on Cyber Monday.

Holiday growth can be difficult because more sales don’t always mean more profit. Margin quietly disappears across ad spend, discounts, inventory decisions, creator payouts, and returns that hit in January.

9 Plays to Defend Your Margin This Holiday Season looks at nine of those places, including:

  • Healthy ROAS hiding money-losing SKUs

  • Discounts on products shoppers aren’t price-comparing

  • Ad dollars going toward inventory at risk of stocking out

  • Creator payouts capped by first-order math

  • Returns that turn into refunds instead of exchanges

Evolving AI: China's AI stock boom has reversed sharply as investors question soaring valuations for chipmakers and robotics firms.

KEY POINTS

  • China's AI- and chip-heavy STAR50 index has fallen 40% since July, wiping out roughly $480 billion in market value.

  • Robot maker Unitree fell nearly 55% from its August listing before rebounding sharply, while chipmakers MetaX and Moore Threads have halved since July.

  • Despite the decline, the STAR50 trades at around 100 times annual earnings, compared with roughly 30 times for the Nasdaq 100.

DETAILS

China's AI stock selloff is threatening to make fundraising and public listings harder for technology companies. The rally began after Beijing introduced economic stimulus in 2024, drawing investors into AI and semiconductor stocks. Goldman Sachs estimates AI-related shares accounted for 42% of China's market value and 57% of trading across mainland and Hong Kong markets. High valuations, tax bills, and possible U.S. restrictions on Chinese data-center suppliers have since added to investor concerns.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

China's $480 billion AI stock wipeout is a warning for American investors holding tech stocks, including through index funds and retirement accounts. With billions pouring into AI companies whose future profits remain uncertain, a similar loss of confidence in the U.S. could quickly erase portfolio gains, even if the technology keeps improving. Startups dependent on fresh investment would face an even greater threat, potentially forcing them to cut research, delay products, or sell to larger rivals. Microsoft, Google, and other cash-rich tech giants could then gain more control over the AI market as smaller competitors struggle to survive.

TOGETHER WITH DATADOG

Evolving AI: AI is becoming one of the most powerful tools in cybersecurity. Unfortunately, hackers are getting access to those same capabilities.

From increasingly sophisticated attacks to security threats that move faster than humans can respond, the rules of cybersecurity are changing fast.

So how can organizations use AI to strengthen their defenses without introducing entirely new risks? Datadog's free CISO Playbook explores how security leaders are adapting to this new reality, with practical strategies for protecting their organizations in the age of AI.

Inside, you'll discover how to:

  • Fight AI with AI: Use AI-powered security operations to stay ahead of emerging threats.

  • Spot hidden vulnerabilities: Identify and manage security risks introduced by AI adoption.

  • Protect what matters: Connect cybersecurity decisions to business continuity, customer trust, and compliance.

  • Investigate threats faster: Learn how unified security and monitoring data can reduce investigation time by 90% or more.

03   /   LEGAL AI

Evolving AI: Anthropic is turning Claude into a legal workspace with ready-made tools for contract reviews, citation checks, and case management.

KEY POINTS

  • Claude can flag contract clauses that break company rules, check legal citations for errors, and track upcoming regulatory changes.

  • Legal teams can customize and share these tools using their own documents and over 60 legal integrations, including Bloomberg Law and Legora.

  • Legal AI company Harvey has built a tool that handles routine employee legal questions and routes complex requests to lawyers.

DETAILS

Anthropic has introduced a gallery of ready-made tools inside Claude for Legal that can review contracts, check legal citations, track regulatory changes, and organize ongoing cases. Called Artifacts, these interactive tools start with working examples that teams can customize using their own documents and connected legal services. Claude performs the initial review and provides links to supporting sources, leaving lawyers to verify the results. Teams can also share these tools with colleagues or clients. The gallery includes tools built by legal AI company Harvey and major law firms, alongside nine tools supporting legal aid work, including eviction and immigration cases.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

OpenAI and Anthropic are giving AI agents more freedom to act, but these findings expose the risk of agents interfering with the very systems meant to keep them under control. OpenAI's recent incidents show this can happen even during legitimate tasks, without clear evidence of deliberate deception. As businesses give AI access to code, files, and sensitive systems, safety cannot depend on agents following rules they can modify themselves. Developers need independent safeguards that agents cannot disable, while businesses must limit what agents can access and change. Without those protections, companies could lose control before they can stop data breaches or serious disruptions.
