THE DAILY BRIEFING   /   4 MIN READ

Welcome back, AI enthusiasts.

China’s Moonshot just launched a new Kimi model that’s holding its own against some of OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s best. But what the company plans to do next could be an even bigger deal for the AI industry. Let’s Dive In!

IN TODAY'S ISSUE

01 Kimi Launches New AI That Challenges GPT-6 and Claude

02 OpenAI's AI Reached the Internet Despite Being Locked Offline

03 Twitter Co-Founder’s New Voice AI Sounds Uncannily Human

01   /   CHINESE FRONTIER AI

Evolving AI: China's Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3.1 Pro, a powerful new model designed to handle complex projects across software, design, and business.

KEY POINTS

  • Artificial Analysis ranked Kimi fourth overall on its Intelligence Index, ahead of GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1.

  • Kimi topped an independent coding-agent benchmark with a 67% success rate, up from just 13% for its predecessor, Kimi K3.

  • In a separate evaluation by Plotly, Kimi correctly answered 42 of 43 data-analysis questions, compared with 35 for K3.

DETAILS

Moonshot has significantly upgraded its previous K3 model by investing far more computing power in reinforcement learning, training K3.1 Pro to handle complex projects that require planning, using tools, and correcting mistakes along the way. The model has 2.8 trillion parameters, with 104 billion active at a time, and a million-token context window, while Moonshot has demonstrated it building games, creating 3D models, and producing financial reports. Its API costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, half of Claude Opus 5.5's published rates, with full model weights scheduled for release on November 4.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

OpenAI and Anthropic face growing pressure as Chinese AI companies like DeepSeek and Moonshot close the performance gap with leading American models while offering more affordable alternatives. If Kimi's planned open-weight release succeeds, businesses with the right infrastructure could run and customize powerful AI themselves, giving them greater control over costs and sensitive data. This competition could also reshape the market for specialist AI startups, which will increasingly need to prove their value through industry expertise, proprietary data, and tools that fit directly into customers' workflows. While established AI giants still have advantages in their developer ecosystems and enterprise products, businesses could gain more freedom to choose providers based on performance, reliability, and the actual cost of getting work done.

The AI notetaker that gets the hard words right

Your AI is only as good as what you feed it. Feed it a transcript with your product names, acronyms, and numbers spelled wrong, and you spend the afternoon hand-fixing the output.

Wispr Flow Notetaker uses your dictionary and calendar, so product names, acronyms, numbers, and uncommon names come out spelled right. It pops up when your meeting starts and captures Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, and Slack huddles with one click, no bot joining the call.

Then your meetings show up inside Claude or ChatGPT through the built-in connector. No copy paste. Try Notetaker free on Mac and Windows.

02   /   AI ESCAPE

Evolving AI: OpenAI paused training its most advanced AI after a research model reached the live internet despite being kept offline, then uncovered more security flaws while investigating the breach.

KEY POINTS

  • An AI model contacted an external chatbot through a security flaw, triggering an 11-day pause in frontier training.

  • OpenAI's security agents uncovered previously unknown vulnerabilities and escaped virtual machines during controlled tests.

  • Other agents exchanged messages between isolated systems without using a network connection.

DETAILS

OpenAI built a cached version of the web so its most advanced models could practice browsing and using apps without accessing the live internet. When one model found a loophole, the company began testing what else could go wrong. It asked AI agents to probe controlled copies of its infrastructure, sometimes giving them technical clues about possible weaknesses. In one test, agents passed messages by measuring tiny timing differences in a chip's memory. OpenAI says it patched the flaws, strengthened monitoring, and resumed training on October 1. These security tests will now help determine whether future training can proceed safely.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

OpenAI's training shutdown raises a serious concern as AI assistants gain access to emails, private files, and company systems. If a model can bypass its security restrictions, it could expose sensitive information or take actions users never approved. While this incident happened inside OpenAI's research environment, it shows how difficult these boundaries can be to enforce, even for the biggest AI labs. OpenAI and its rivals will now need to invest more time and money in security, potentially slowing development. Before people trust AI with sensitive information and important decisions, companies must ensure that a simple request cannot turn into a privacy breach or an action the user never authorized.

As AI adoption accelerates, new attack surfaces are emerging across infrastructure, supply chains, and model interfaces. Datadog’s AI Security Best Practices Guide breaks down how to secure:

  • The underlying components that host and run AI applications

  • The software and data that an AI application uses to operate

  • The entry points and business logic that enable a user to interact with an AI application

This guide provides actionable strategies to help teams strengthen AI security without slowing innovation.

03   /   HUMANIC VOICE AI

Evolving AI: Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder, has unveiled Dessa, a new voice AI model from his company Block that speaks with remarkably humanlike emotion, expression, and timing.

KEY POINTS

  • Dessa can listen and speak simultaneously, laugh mid-sentence, respond to emotions like sadness or frustration, and naturally interrupt conversations.

  • Unlike traditional language models, Dessa was trained entirely on recordings of human conversations, without written text or a pretrained AI model.

  • Dessa can run locally on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip or better, generating speech faster than real time.

DETAILS

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey's company Block, which owns Square and Cash App, developed Dessa to make AI conversations feel more natural. Unlike voice assistants that convert speech into text, Dessa processes sound directly, picking up subtle cues like sarcasm, hesitation, and emotional tone. In live demonstrations, it laughs during conversations, raises its voice when asked, and reacts emotionally to an anniversary surprise. The model remains a research preview, with early access limited to a small group of AI safety researchers.

❝

WHY IT MATTERS

Calling a restaurant shouldn't mean repeating your order every time you ask a question or change your mind. Block already offers AI-powered phone ordering and conversational kiosks through Square, giving Dessa a practical place to improve these interactions. If integrated, it could reduce misunderstandings, make ordering easier, and free up staff. It could also help Block compete with OpenAI and Google, while Dessa's ability to run locally could reduce reliance on expensive cloud infrastructure. If the technology proves reliable, businesses could offer more natural customer service at a lower cost.
